Gluconolactone is a lactone form of gluconic acid, obtained from glucose in a biooxidation process. Thanks to its cyclic chemical structure, it shows keratolytic effects comparable to those of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), but is much better tolerated by the skin. When used in combination with other active substances, it enhances their therapeutic effects and improves their availability in the skin, having a positive effect on the final outcome of the treatment.
