Glycolic acid is the most commonly used type of alpha-hydroxy acid. It is produced by appropriate treatment of sugar cane. The main advantages of glycolic acid include moisturizing the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles (including facial wrinkles), and regenerating skin damaged by excessive sun exposure.
Recent studies indicate that glycolic acid also acts as an inhibitor of melanin synthesis, mainly due to its tyrosinase content - this allows for effective treatment of hyperpigmentation.
